Introduction
About AIYS
news and notes
|
AIYS, a consortium of institutions of higher education and a member of the Council of American Overseas
Research Centers, is the only American interdisciplinary academic organization active on the Arabian
peninsula. It is the primary link between the American academic community and
the Yemeni government as well as the Yemeni academic community.
|
AIYS, through its U.S. office and its Resident Director in Sana'a, serves as an essential resource for American scholars, journalists, and visitors by:
- maintaining a permanent presence in Yemen, with a hostel, library, and working facilities;
- obtaining funding for, awarding, and administering fellowships;
- procuring research clearances and other permissions for scholars;
- providing contacts with Yemeni officials and academics;
- acting as an information exchange, especially through its bulletin, Yemen Update (in hard copy and online), and through the other resources presented in this site under Yemen Webdate;
- conducting workshops and orientation sessions;
- maintaining a lecture series in Sana'a;
- organizing conferences in Yemen and elsewhere;
- publishing books on Yemen;
- representing Yemeni Studies to American academic, governmental, and general audiences (AIYS sponsors a modest lecture series in the U.S.; contact the administrative office for details).
On this site you will find information concerning AIYS
programs such as fellowships, publications, and scholarly research
support; guidelines for scholars who wish to do research in Yemen; and
assorted other administrative information. AIYS at MESA gives you
a list of panels and presentations on Yemen given at past meetings of
the Middle East Studies Association and instructions on how to propose
a panel for future meetings; the MESA list and the list of lectures given
at AIYS in Sana'a can serve as a resource for where to find information
on Yemeni studies. In members' projects you can find
descriptions of projects sponsored in Yemen by AIYS members. The Amiriya
project illustrates the international effort to reconstruct and conserve the Amiriya
madrasa in Rada, one of Yemen's most outstanding medieval monuments, a project administered
from 1996 through its completion in 2005 by AIYS. On this site you will also find a
description of and access to the Digital Library for International
Research, a project sponsored by Council of American Overseas Research Centers in
cooperation with all its member centers, and initially funded through grants from the
U.S. Department of Education to AIYS and from the Institute for Museum and Library Services
to CAORC. And by clicking on Yemen Webdate you
will enter a self-contained part of the site maintained by Daniel
Varisco. There you will find the archived issues of the AIYS bulletin Yemen Update,
a filmology on Yemen, and assorted other scholarly resources on Yemen.
We welcome comments and suggestions concerning both parts of the site.
