October in the Yemeni mountains is the local season known as ṣurāb, an ancient Yemeni term for the autumn harvest of sorghum (dhura). In the past sorghum was a major staple in all parts of Yemen, providing grain for bread and the porridge known as ‘aṣīd, as well as leaves and stalks for animal fodder.
